Wheatgrass

Sagz = Saggy Ass.

When I was growing up, I used to watch my mom display masochistic behaviour. It was consistent and inexplicable. She used to juice bitter gourd. And wheatgrass. Bitter gourd (karela) couched in spices and cooked crisp was my favourite veggie, but there’s no way in heck I can drink its juice raw. I still don’t know why my mom juiced those things. She wasn’t diabetic or ill. As I said, she just liked to torture herself.

It’s the same with wheatgrass. I once had a sip of the juice and that memory scarred me forever. It tasted like grass on which some dogs had done their business. I can’t manage to gulp down wheatgrass juice, but it’s quite palatable in smoothies in small amounts.

Tender wheatgrass, if you chew it, is quite sweet. It’s when you swallow it that the bitterness takes over. Wheatgrass is rich in chlorophyll, calcium, magnesium & potassium. Chlorophyll increases alkalinity while cleansing, detoxifying and healing the body.

Putting a small bit of wheatgrass in a smoothie makes me feel quite virtuous. Plus I like the idea of growing something in winter. It’s super easy to grow indoors, even when it’s freezing and dark outside.

Sprouted Wheat

1. Get whole wheat berries (preferably organic) and sprout them. (HOW TO SPROUT WHEAT)

2. You want the tiniest sprouts, not long ones. Put a handful of the little sprouted wheat berries in a pot with organic potting soil, spread them out evenly and add 1/4 inch of soil on top.

3. Water until the soil is damp, but not soaking wet. Cover the pot with a plastic cling wrap so that the light gets in, but the moisture does not get out.

4. Keep in a warm spot with some natural light (near a window) and on the third day you should see little green shoots. Take the plastic wrap off. Water every two or three days.

5. Cut the wheat grass on the seventh or eighth day. It can take three of four haircuts before you need to sprout and grow new seeds.

Jai went out for Italian with his friends tonight, leaving me with a Sagz-to-Sexy Smoothie. I consoled myself in the knowledge that white bread and panna cotta make your ass saggy.

Sagz-to-Sexy Wheatgrass Smoothie

It has
A handful of wheatgrass
half cup Butternut Squash
a handful of organic frozen strawberries
1 Apple
1 Kiwi
2 scoops Pea and Rice Protein Powder
1 tbsp Flax powder
1/2 cup light coconut milk

Tasted quite good, actually.

Wheatgrass Sagz-toSexy-Smoothie is our entry for Grow Your Own. This month’s hosts are Nate and Annie @ House of Annie.

What a funny pic! I grew wheat grass last summer. I must have let it get too tall because the juice (although mixed with carrot juice) was quite bitter. I sowed seeds directly into the soil without sprouting them, it takes a few extra days that way. It’s very healthy and easy to grow, costs a lot at health food stores.
