“You Are Always Near”.
September 11, 2009 |
Sand artist Kseniya Simonova, winner of Ukraine’s Got Talent.
Here, she recounts Germany conquering Ukraine in the second world war. She brings calm, then conflict. A couple on a bench become a woman’s face; a peaceful walkway becomes a conflagration; a weeping widow morphs into an obelisk for an unknown soldier. Simonova looks like some vengeful Old Testament deity as she destroys then recreates her scenes - with deft strokes, sprinkles and sweeps she keeps the narrative going. She moves the judges to tears as she subtitles the final scene “you are always near” (Source).
What she depicts is love and war, set amidst the turmoil of WWII. Ukraine was probably the area most devastated in the war, even more than Germany. It was a conflict that saw nearly one in four Ukrainians killed.
Ukraine represented almost 20 percent of all the causalities suffered during WWII. And that was after Stalin had killed millions during the manufactured famines before the war. It to this day touches every Ukrainian. That’s the context of war memory that Kseniya reaches out to. (Source)

The woman is an artist in more ways than one…not only is her sand art phenomenal, her way of throwing the sand to the music, the way she moves her arms and fngers is also extremely dramatic (and fluidly dance-like) The spirit that backs her skills seems even more amazing than the skills themselves…..
Thank you so much for sharing this.
Amazing. I’m touched
Phenomenal. I saw this video a few days ago and it stirred in me something I couldn’t name. Great artists are made of that stuff.
This is perhaps the most awesome video I ever saw. Thanks for sharing !!

She wrote an epic with sand..
Thanks, Jai and Bee.
What a find! I’ve e-mailed this to several people.
Very moving. I found myself in tears all three times I watched.
Such a compelling reminder of a larger context. Such a contrast to the current widespread small minded disregard for the disenfranchised in our country. I wish those who are apparently willing to abandon civility and compassion could be somehow made to watch. Perhaps then they’d recall the sacrifices that created their opportunity to willfully ignore the needs of their brothers and sisters.
Thats simply amazing. She is great. Thanks for sharing J & B.
I am COMPLETELY & UTTERLY AWESTRUCK
I have no words …
I believe she is a medium of some kind..as she transmits with her whole core, the energy of such realities which unfortunately continue to be coherent to this day..
Thank you sooo much for sharing this.. Mia
thanks for sharing, this is quite amazing talent.
Moving. Absolutely beautiful.
Beautifully moving!
thank you for sharing!
This is amazing!
I’d seen a sand artist live at IITB several years ago. Dumb me, I have no memory of who he was, where he was from or what he drew. But I do remember being awestruck and mesmerized after the show.
A friend googled and found out for me, he was a Hungarian artist called Ferenc Cako. I found a youtube video of what he drew that day, it was called ‘Genesis’

Thank you for reminding me about this wonderful art form I had once seen, but long forgotten!
She is beyong phenomenal. Such talent she has. I can so relate to the music (they are well known Soviet songs and melodies) and to the drawings as somebody raised in the Soviet times (Azerbaijan was part of SU too) and someone whose countrymen died in the WWII war or never returned as my great grandfather.. THank you for sharing.
Truly amazing. I passed it to all my friends. Thanks much for sharing.
I canot see the video as it say resticted in your country due to copyright restiction.
