Dandelion Puffs

September 29, 2009 |

A prolific pain in the grass

… by the river.

It’s a perfect machine, the dandelion.

A perfect, terrible little breeding machine.

It shows up around March in these parts.

Savita offers one to her uncle Barack (Pic by White House photographer Pete Souza)

One yellow head becomes a darling, delicate puff of white that tempts small children to make a wish and, with a single blast of breath, unleash 300 more dandelions onto the world.

The little whirligig paratrooper seeds fan out, germinate and turn into more puff balls for more children to blow.

Within a couple of summers, that one dandelion can become an army of 90,000. (Source)

very beautiful pictures of a very painfulion. Last arpil Dandelion one day became a “White Tiger” in my 3 year old’s head.. she wanted to blow out the tiger puffs to make a wish :-D DD1 figured out what she was talking about.. we would have never guessed till she went out & showed us.

Why the younger kids, even older kids like me are guilty of unleashing those armies of 90,000s :-D

  4. Patricia says:

I confess! I still do this now and again when the inner child launches herself into the world. Same with stomping in mud puddles!

Oh that first shot in particular, I love a lot!

  6. Nirmala says:

In the first pic the background dandelions make a lovely bokeh effect! Lovely!

I agree with Veggie belly here. Reading the title…I thought it was another special recipe. :) Loved the first pic.

It is all a matter of placement, yes? When we lived in Utah and I saw fields on mountain slopes covered with tiny yellow flowers, I was only aware of their beauty and persistence and determination. Such strength combined with such delicacy. Inspiring.

When we got back to our home in the very suburban valley and I noted them again, only this time invading our lawn, I realized their beauty was most definitely an “eye of the beholder” phenomenon. Enlightening.

As always, thoughtfully composed, both words and images. For whatever reason (because I need to?) this post is lifting my spirits this morning. Thank you!

That first photo is my favourite, but they are all super!

The first time I saw dandelions here in US, I thought I was in the movie Silsila! I was truly surprised to learn that it is considered a weed. Love the pictures.

Dandelions in my backyard actually look pretty!

I hate weeds, but I love to smash them with my feet :-)

  13. Rupa says:

Yup, I thought finally I could cook those little suckers in some awesome recipe of yours! Wrong! I have had dandelion soup (not all species are good I believe)and it’s excellent for health…great pics! You can make even those pesky weeds look so gorgeous!

  14. Sharmila says:

Pesky weed it may be, but you’ve transformed it into such a beautiful photoworthy subject! I don’t blame you though, they are such friendly looking things that take the proverbial ell when given an inch…lovely photos!

HAVE YOUR SAY.
