Devil Dash

August 22, 2009 | 12 Comments

The Hells Canyon Wilderness is the home to the “Seven Devils” region. Lying within a narrow 3 mile by 40 mile stretch bounded on the west by the north flowing Snake River and on the east by the south flowing Salmon River, the area is home to numerous tall peaks.

It is the most precipitous range in Idaho with elevation ranging from 1000 ft at the Snake River to over 9000 ft at the top of the taller peaks in the range. Hells Canyon is the deepest river gorge in North America.

For the past three years, a friend at work has tried to convince me to embrace craziness by being part of the “Devil Dash”. A one day 28 mile hike starting at 7500 ft with a total elevation gain of 1 mile. The trail loops around some of the major peaks in the range – She Devil (9400 ft), He Devil (9400 ft), The Ogre (256 ft), Tower of Babel (9269 ft), Devils Throne (9280 ft), Devils Tooth (7760 ft), Potato Hill (8100 ft), and Twin Imps (9000 ft) and is supposed to have breathtaking views of the canyons below.

Let’s just say that all my creative excuses were found wanting this year and I signed up. Too late to pay heed to the guide book which states “Type of Hike: Three to Ten day Backpacking Loop”.

The Google Earth image above shows the Snake River national scenic trail in blue and the seven devils loop in red. We’ll be going counter clockwise to beat the heat in the afternoon. There are many trails that go from the top all the way down to the river.

Three of us (Tony, Mike, and myself) will head up to Riggins, ID next Friday and camp at the trailhead (sleep under the stars – weather permitting). Early Saturday (hopefully by 6 am) we’ll set out. We’ll be carrying a SPOT tracker with us so that you can monitor our progress on a live map right in the comfort of your home.

Why are we doing the Devil Dash?
Tony is dashing in memory of his Mom, who passed away in 2002 from cerebral glioblastoma multiforme, for his son Alexander’s music teacher Marika Warila, who is valiantly fighting cancer, and for fellow Devil Dasher Tulug and his daughter Aylin, who lost her Mom and was injured in a tragic accident last year.

Mike is dashing on behalf of his friend and hiking buddy Tim Love, who has been diagnosed with macular degeneration at the young age of 44. Mike is also dashing in remembrance of his uncle Kenny who lost a brief and sudden bout with cancer shortly after building his retirement home with his lovely wife Dorothy.

I am dashing in memory of my friend Hari Muthuswamy who lost his battle with Leukemia in 2006 and my uncle who passed away in 2007 from colon cancer.

We are using this opportunity to raise money for American Cancer Society (ACS) and American Macular Degeneration Foundation (AMDF) through the regular Jugalbandi readership and also through our workplace for Marika Warila who was diagnosed with cancer couple of months ago. We are requesting pledges of support strictly on an “honor system” basis. Please indicate your choice of donation in the form below. The suggested pledge amount is $1 per mile. If you are choosing ACS, please send your donation directly to ACS and if you are choosing AMDF, please send your donations directly to AMDF and just indicate the amount in the form below. If you are pledging for The Warila Family, we’ll contact you the following week.

{fundraiser complete – form removed – thanks to all those who contributed}

Thank you for your support and hope you will be able to join us live Saturday, 08/29/09.

-Jai

UPDATE 8/26/09: We have a fourth Dasher joining us.

Tulug is dashing in memory of Gesa Maria Lamers, his beloved wife and mother of their one and only daughter Aylin. Gesa & Aylin were visiting family March of 2008 in Maryland where a sudden and very tragic accident took Gesa from us leaving a gaping void in our lives. Aylin was in the same car but miraculously survived. He is also dashing in memory of all loved ones that are taken away from us ever so untimely & unexpectedly.

The more the merrier…We now have a fifth dasher. Tim Love is joining us too.

It doesn’t seem like a “dash” to me, maybe it is a dash for the devil. :-) All the best and my wishes to all your friends, who very lovingly are walking in memory of their loved ones.Hike Safe.

Wish I had seen this when it was happening. Not yet in the habit of visiting blogs on a regular basis. A follow-up on how it went would be interesting to read. Both on the hike and the fund-raising. Do you have one?

Our family’s ‘Cancer Dance’ and tragedy led me to attend an inspiring workshop mid-June about two innovative integrative cancer clinics that are having AMAZING HEALING results with their clients, most of whom have Stage 4 (terminal) diagnoses. There are two testimonies at the end of the article. Do read them…healing and even complete remission IS POSSIBLE! My wish is to get the word out to those in need and folks recognize or suspect standard protocols have pretty dire effects and statistical results.

Posted an article on my EssentialOilsForHealing blog: “Conquering Cancer ~ Breakthrough Healing Protocols” and as a resource page on FigsWithBri: ‘Cancer Clinics Offer
Breakthrough Healing Protocols.’ If we had known about these clinics in early 2008, Bri might still be with us and happily blogging every day.
