Yellow-headed Blackbird

June 23, 2009 |

Each year they come to breed near the cattails and reeds not far from our home.

Juvenile bird with dark flecks, dark wings and tail, and two large white wingbars; seen only on breeding grounds.

Camera: Canon 5D Mark II
Lens: 70-200 mm

What a yellow-headed blackbird sounds like.

    Handsome birds. Great shots.

We have red-wing blackbirds here in northern CA that fill a similar role in the habitat. They look so spiffy with their red wing bar ‘epaulettes.’ Pretty trilling songs, too.

Such nice crisp snaps of the birds in flight - shows what a good camera in the right hands can do. Well that and patience on the part of the photographer. I am guessing somebody spent quite a while quietly waiting to be in position for the various shots.

I appreciated the link to hear their “song” as well. What a racket coming out of those gorgeously colored bodies.

We have a local miniature version somewhat similar - goldfinches with the same basic color scheme. They perch on much smaller stems and eat wildflower seeds and thistle in special feeders. Their high-low “song” is often compared to a rusty hinge on a gate.

You have an open invitation to visit and photograph them any time.
