We have a new occupant in our backyard. To officially scare me shitless, Jai took a picture.

  3. Soma says:

I do not like your back yard any more:-( if there is any thing i really hate, it would be a snake.

  4. Johanna says:

Creepy yes, and strangely beautiful too! I did once live with someone who wanted a pet snake and I really didn’t like the idea of that

  5. BongMom says:

and still you want to move to the city ???????????

  6. Pooja says:

it’s probably no consolation to you, but i was glad to see it was small and not poisonous.

are you going to capture it or let it be? i hope it doesn’t have a mate….*shudder* i am really, really uncomfortable around slithery creatures.

  7. Kalai says:

You’re not the only one who’s scared! Oh my gosh!! Is it still hanging around??

  8. Gauri says:

:) ))) Reminds me of the days when we used to go over to Kerala during the school vacations and there have been many incidents when me and my cousins have come across this particular “friend”.

If it is any consolation, most of them are the non-poisonous variety – though I admit it does freak one out :) .

I’d written about one such incident – just in case you’d like to read up on it …

  10. Swati says:

On the bright side you don’t need to worry about any other critters now :)

I actually think its beautiful. Do you know what kind is it?

  11. Madhuram says:

You definitely creeped me out. I hate snakes. Actually all reptiles.

  12. arundati says:

omg!! creepy…. but is it poisonous?? that should lay some of your fears to rest…. mine? i am still staring owl eyed at the picture!! eeeks…

  13. Giff says:

is that a kind of garter snake, or something more serious?

  14. Roshni says:

its not creepy at all…its a garden snake and will rid you of creepier stuff like mice, rats and bugs which will eat up your plants and flowers! Give it a break!!
Its not even poisonous! So don’t worry about it!! :)

  15. Manggy says:

I was getting prepared for an animated disembodied zombie head! Ha ha ha. To be fair, unless I was sure it wouldn’t strike at me, I think I’d be creeped out too :)

  16. Rosa says:

Cute from far away only ;-P…

    Cheers,

    Rosa

  17. Nirmala says:

Really scary! When we were in Cuddalore these kind of non-poisonous snake rest at the door step and hence each morning when opning the door we would be watching our steps :(

  18. Parita says:

Oh dear..what are u gonna do now?

  19. veda says:

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!HOW DID U ACTUALLY MANAGE TO TAKE A PIC!!!!!!!!!!IF I HAD A CAMERA IN MY HAND….I THINK THAT TOO WOULD START TREMBLING!!!!whats with snakes n me? i have only been hearing abt them….i just heard from my friends they spotted two big snakes around the apartment complex!!!!!!!since then i have been freaking out…..like checking the balcony often or the utility space:-)hehehe

  20. sra says:

    Yikes!

Someone v solicitously told me that snakes are not wet and yucky at all, they are quite dry.

  21. Sharmila says:

So cute! I think it is the other way ’round ;-) I mean … just look at it trying to hide. :-)

  22. Kay says:

I knew it… The moment I read your post, I had a feeling that it might be a snake. And I’m creeped out. Poisonous or not – snakes scare the hell out of me. For a girl who had a garden lizard moving on my back for 3-4 mins – any crawlies creep me out.

But I got to say I do think some snakes, esp. hooded one are beautiful – only in pictures or on tv.

  23. Shreya says:

yikes!! I can’t stand the sight of snakes. I have seen enough as a child; I once cycled over one when I was a kid in our garden in Kerala, fell down, and went running back to the house and never touched that cycle again! I can write stories about each ‘episode’ of encountering snakes in and around our house (yes, “in” means inside the house:D). Hope this one does not harm you or crawl inside your bedroom…just kidding, with Jai around I am sure you don’t have to worry. And I’ve officially missed two presentations from the “Friends of Snakes” group at the office, where they tried to explain that they are really nice creatures and don’t harm us unless we harm them.

      Meaning what – exactly? :-) )

  24. Deb says:

Bee you are brave to post the photo and clearly have plenty of company in the “ugh!” category. I am trying to remember if I was always afraid of snakes or had to be taught to fear them. I’m over most of that now – had to desensitize myself to live here in Central Texas and garden. Just too many of them about so I had to get over my fear, although I have a VERY healthy respect and keep my distance.

You know what totally creeps me out no matter what? Rats. When I realized snakes will keep mice and rat populations down (and yes we have them locally as well) I decided to at least call a truce as long as they all stay out of our house.

Inside my house? Nothing/nobody is safe from my wrath.

  25. maggie says:

    I think it’s beautiful!
I seem to have missed out on that atavistic fear of snakes and love all of the reptile family. Not to say I wouldn’t be sensible around them, but pictures of them are just fine!
Live in peace with your snake. x

  26. Priya says:

OMG! poisonous or not, the mere thought would be enough to keep me freaked out! did you *have* to post this today, I had plans to go on a trek tomorrow :-S not any more I guess :( (

  27. indosungod says:

    Bee, Thank you!!!

Here is one more for your viewing pleasure ;)
    Baby Snake

This one was sitting under the garage. When I opened the garage to get DD2′s bicycle, she noticed it and glad to note she did not freak. As for her mother …

  28. indosungod says:

    Sorry, here is the link

  29. Lakshmi says:

I am scared of rats, mice, snakes, lizards everything..just name it. They freak me out.
If I were you, I would be scared to step in that garden anymore.
So this photo symbolizes the fact your city move is getting closer??

  30. [...] Just to creep you out [...]

  31. Anonymous says:

Just seeing the picture sends me a chill….

  32. john says:

What’s the matter with you people? It’s just a snake. It’s not even poisonous. Are you also afraid of squirrels and birds and bunny rabbits?

What has happened to mankind? Are we so removed from nature that the sight of a snake creeps everyone out? Sad.

  33. Margie says:

Bee, I hope you never have to see this critter again, for your sake. I can appreciate your fear, I have it over spiders, and I DO understand their importance in the scheme of all things, but that doesn’t change my thought processes. Every spider is a dangerous spider as far as I am concerned.

  34. Wing Nut says:

Bee, I’m totally with you on this one. I know they are part of the animal kingdom. I know they have a purpose, and garter snakes in particular are a gardener’s friend. BUT… I’m with you on the phobia. I had to minimize the screen to see the picture so I wouldn’t freak out too much. I love furry creatures. I like feathered creatures. But scaly creatures that slither just wig me out! Wing Nut

  35. Kavitha says:

I can understand your fear. I’ve had a close encounter with a Indian cobra many years back. I can never forget that incident. The snake had raised its head and was about to attack and then moved away from there quickly. Recently I was watching a program “India’s deadly dozen ” on National Geographic and Indian cobra was one in their list and needless to say I couldn’t sleep that night! I think I’ve been lucky that day and I don’t want to be near ANY snake again in my life.

  36. I had one in my backyard and scared the hell out of me. I wouldn’t let my kids go out and play. This was 2 years ago and even though I have a tiny backyard, I always check at every nook and corner, before I let the kids out and I stay with them the entire time. We have a creek followed by a forest outside the house and so in the summer there are toads, frogs, deer, fox, turkey vultures, and of course snakes (that I think live in the creek) most of these animals come to quench their thirst. It is hell scary!

  37. joey says:

Ack! Heebie jeebies attack right now! Nyar!

  38. meeso says:

    Awww, he’s a cute lil guy :)
