Chokecherry blossoms

Today, we finished our planting for the season – herbs, veggies, fruit.

Herbs in the Patio

Last year’s arugula growing wild

The strawberry plants are multiplying fast, but there’s not a single berry.

Applemint growing from both ends of the pot.

Newly-planted Pear tree

The cherry tree we planted a few weeks ago has fruit. Will they ripen before the birds get to them?

Jai plants tomatoes.

He made biodegradable bags by stapling together sheets of landscape fabric. These are great for composting and for growing potatoes.

How to Grow Potatoes.

Such heartwarming pictures. I wish to have a bountiful garden like yours someday.

  2. Cynthia says:

I was telling a friend just the other day about the new potatoes you grew last year and sent her the link from your blog. When she experiments I’ll let you know.

  3. A&N says:

Such an effort! I wish I had space to grow SOMETHING!

  4. Soma says:

Very Inspiring! the strawberries multiplies like that?!

  5. Nags says:

I have two plants now, curry leaves which I bought as a baby plant and green chillies that I sowed and are now baby plants. I don’t have a balcony, garden or even a window sill that gets sunlight. So what I do is, when the sun streams in through the windows, I put the plants in it and keep moving them through the day as the light moves. Then again, this is only over weekends.. my plants are not dying on me yet :)

    Great work! :)

    • jai bee says:

  8. Nirmala says:

Lovely garden. Till now I have seen few parts of the garden in your pics and now can imagine how big would it be. Imagining a lovely moonlit dinner there during summer :)

  9. Giff says:

excellent! All I’ve done so far is plant herbs — the deer are ravenous on anything not right up close to the house!

  10. arundati says:

oh!! i cant help but sigh at the green…. we locked up the house in this crushing summer for 4 full days and i came back to much wilted plants…angry at me for making them languish…and the curry leaves plant… it just died on me… i have no one to blame sadly :) …. your pics are so lush…enjoy the fruits of your labour…

  11. Paz says:

Awesome! You’re going to enjoy the fruits of your labor. Have a great week.

  17. Alka says:

Did somebody heard me saying big J…..?This looks like my dream place.Though i prefer the convenience of residential Apartments, i would love to switch home with you guys for some vacation ,spending my days in such a lovely garden, plucking cherries and strawberries(hopefully the plant will have some till then).Ofcourse it would be tedious to maintain such a manicured garden , but i have a hubby dear who can take care of that while i click him toiling ;-)

  18. Happy Cook says:

Wow yçou guys have strawberry plants in your garden.
That has to be really good.
The only herbs i have in my verand is parsley, mint, thyme etc…….and that too in tiny pots

  19. sunita says:

What a wonderful garden…we’ve started a few bits here and there…let’s see whta comes of them :-)

  20. BlueMist says:

Lovely Garden. Your efforts to keep it that way are evident. Kudos

  21. Beautiful garden. You will love having a pear tree. We have two, which we inherited when we bought our house, and with some hard pruning during the first couple of years (the trees had been neglected — so sad), they have been giving us hundreds of pears in the late summer each year. Enjoy!

  22. Manggy says:

Yay! Excited by the promise of a bountiful strawberry crop :) Nice quads, Jai (heh :)

  23. Kay says:

Wow!! I’m just amazed. The garden looks beautiful!!

  24. Deb says:

Jai you are cutting a fine figure in Bee’s great photographs. What a lovely garden you are creating there together. I am jealous of your “surplus” arugula. It is already hot here and mine all bolted some time ago. I am reduced to buying it in the store and the local stuff won’t last much longer.

Oddly enough my strawberry plants are not multiplying, but are producing berries. Maybe they do those tasks in turn. Berry first then multiply, then berry up again? I do know I have to watch carefully and harvest the berries before completely ripe or one of 3-4 other interested outdoor eaters with full time access will grab them all.

I like your shade cloth idea, especially for composting. The raccoons here keep digging up under the side, getting into our plastic container. I wonder if using a shade cloth alternative would prevent that. Hmmmm……

  25. Kalyn says:

Lucky you! I’m so far behind this year, but my house is still a major construction zone. I did get a few things planted this weekend though. I’m still looking for a couple of plants that I really want. For some reason, not many squash plants are showing up at any of the stores here yet.

Nice legs on that Jai too! He looks very fit.

  26. joey says:

Lovely garden! I dream of growing my own herbs and veggies like this one day :)

  27. Sapna says:

    Hey Bee,

Do you plan to have tomatoes on the ground too? If so have you transplanted them already? I keep moving mine indoors at night (zone 5). Maybe I’ll wait until May 15th to transplant them. All the best with your garden and keep posting those gorgeous pictures.

  28. Shreya says:

grt pics! amazing bit of work, especially the biodegradable bags. Wish I had the space and land I would…

  29. Cham says:

The garden is keeping u busy! Look like a small farm u own on ur backyard! I am wondering ur straw how they multiplied :) I feel u guy have a great agriculture soil!

  30. Manisha says:

Yum! And you know what I am talking about ;-)

  31. shoba says:

Your garden looks neat. The only plants in my so-called yard are roses as they are low maintenance.Tried planting tomatoes, but they die pretty soon..LOL. And ofcourse, there is mint everywhere .Sometimes, my roses smell like mint too..;-)

  32. Manasi says:

U have a wonderful garden! that is to say, u 2 have kept it that way!!

  33. Lakshmi says:

you have turned that backyard into an awesome piece of land with a beautiful garden, pebbles, pavement etc. I know how big of an effort it is…just lawn mowing and watering for me is a huge effort. Once kids are out of infant stage, want to start with growing herbs atleast.
    Inspired by you both.
    **Cheers**

  34. Margie says:

Oh, such a pretty, pretty yard!!!

I love Jai’s idea on the fabric. And…I do LOVE composting. I smile just thinking about it :) …nothing is ever wasted.

Bee, when the Blue Heron was feasting on my fish pond I bought netting (in my attempt(s) to ward him off), it didn’t keep him from the fish, but the following year it kept the sparrows from nipping at my tomato plants.

  35. Sharmila says:

Beautiful garden Jai & Bee! What a pleasure it must be to work amongst plants and the smell of moist earth and freshly trimmed plants!
    Hope the cherries survive. :-)

  36. mandira says:

you have a beautiful garden Jai and Bee. We had a frost warning couple of days ago and had to bring all the tomato plants in.

  37. Rush says:

U have an amazing garden…i know how much goes into it coz had one.
Well, my tulsi babies have now grown..come visit the blog whenever u have the time, will b transplating them soon into pots :)
