Garden Guests

This California Quail took shelter under our Austrian pine in the rain this afternoon.

“Did you ever see an unhappy horse? Did you ever see bird that had the blues? One reason why birds and horses are not unhappy is because they are not trying to impress other birds and horses.” ~ Dale Carnegie

Well, this one certainly looked pissed off – as though someone refused to polish its tiara or something.

Also visiting today was this American Kestrel – a type of falcon. It was perched very close to our bird feeder, making a meal of one of the little birds that came to feed there.

Right now, there’s a triple rainbow in the evening sky and the quail is probably still hiding under that tree.

The quail really does look all huff-y and puff-y. Probably thinking Bah Rainbows Bainbows, just Fetch me the Pot of Gold.

That quail is indeed beautiful! But don’t quails always look pissed? :)
I think male birds try to impress female birds all the time!

Love the rainbow, we had one last month. It was Sunny one minute and raining the next, so we ran outside to see one and there it was.!

Great shot of the quail. With their striking black/white markings they are so very graphic looking. And wow – a kestrel! We have red tailed hawks locally. One chasing down a dove caused it to slam into a plate glass window by our upstairs deck. It ended badly for the dove of course and when I went upstairs to see what had caused the noise the hawk glared fiercely at me before taking off with prey still grasped in talons for a more private feeding spot.

I catch myself wishing the “red in tooth and claw” stuff could happen further out of my sight which is quite lame coming from a carnivore. It just occurred to me for the first time how a lot of birds flying over people barbecuing poultry might feel exactly the same way!

I love birds of prey (well, all birds, but birds of prey are especially dramatic). We have a duo of red tailed hawks who have adopted our neighborhood. That kestrel is stunning.

Gorgeous photos :-) Quite a few varieties of birds visit us too; for the last few weeks, we’ve been sleeping and waking to the chirping of birds.I usually manage to take a picture when they’re in our garden,, but the kids get so excited when they’re around, and the hushinbg is a bit too loud for the birds to stay long enough :-(
