A wild goose chase

“If you feel the urge, don’t be afraid to go on a wild goose chase. What do you think wild geese are for anyway?” ~ Will Rogers

Trying to flap its wings.
“A wild goose never reared a tame gosling.” ~ Irish Proverb

“The art of taxation consists in so plucking the goose as to get the most feathers with the least hissing.” ~ Jean Baptiste Colbert

““Oh, nature’s noblest gift, my grey goose quill, Slave of my thoughts, obedient to my will, Torn from the parent bird to form a pen, That mighty instrument of little men.” ~ Lord Byron

Awesome! Is that a gosling in the third snap?
LOVELY!!!!
ok, I know this will sound awful specially since you obviously put in a lot of effort taking these pics, but that third pic of the gosling looked as if its head has been split open….
um…sorry!!
those are wings.
Gorgeous pictures..love the last one!!!
what a pity I cant see any pictures
Dont know why but I have probs loading your page!
How timely! I just saw two wild geese and babies yesterday while driving. Lovely photos.
Yeah me too love the B/W the best.
Lovely Click! The B/W is the best:)
Seeing simple beauty in everything is a nac too. I admire that quality in people. Your pics truly bring out that simple beauty.
The last one is my fav!
It would be fascinating to get a peek inside the minds of the ones liking that B/W photo best. Is it because it is of babies? We are all programmed to respond warmly to babies. Is it the backlighting on their downy feathers? That evokes sunrise/sunset and we are apparently programmed to respond a certain way to the light that time of day as well. I think I like B/W photos because I don’t see so many of them these days, because the absence of color has me LOOKING more closely, and appreciating the composition more. I think I like THIS B/W photo because it reminds me of a favorite childhood storybook – “Make Way for Ducklings”. Otherwise I am not such a fan of the C.geese (in real life) because in Illinois where my brother lives they are pesty in large groups.
That these pictures are fabulous goes without saying. I really like the quotes you’ve used.
Lovely photos and quotes!
beautiful beautiful.. love those teensy weensy wings!
Vow! Beautiful Pictures!! Love the glow on the first photo. Was it early morning? What camera and lens did you use?
evening. canon 5d mark II, 70-200mm.
Too cute! I visit your site because your recipes are always tempting, but your wonderful photos also keep bring me back.
love the photos! and I love B&W photography, although it rarely works for food, it works so well with so many other subjects. Up in the Catskills we are near a pond that is an amazing waypoint for birds — in the winter it is be chockoblock with canadian and snowy geese, swans, mallards and other ducks. I could stare at them all day.
awesome pics..the goslings look soo cute!!!
Lovely pictures, Jai– they have never looked more majestic
Love the pict, look like a whole happy family!
Next time you see a pair (or more) of adult Geese, especially with goslings, observe closely. You will notice that one, and only one, will have its neck fully extended and be in a totally watchful pose while all the others feed. Then another will take on sentry duty while the previous sentry eats. This way, they always have one lookout at all times. They are monogamous.
Even though they are migratory, there are several all year resident colonies, mostly east of the mississippi, but also seen in the northwest.
A flock of canada geese can completely destroy a lawn’s natural beauty in under an hour – by the time they are done, there is green poop all over the place.
While they hiss and snap a lot, they cannot actually do any damage if you walk up and grab a hold of one. However, their beaks have a little serrated edge to them that they can actually create a scratch on your skin. Yes, I am speaking from personal experience.
lovely, lovely pics!!
