Paneer = Indian cottage cheese. Tikki = cutlets. Pasanda = Liked.

When you have ten cookbooks by one author and have tried close to fifty of her recipes – each with great success – the law of averages is bound to catch up.

This one bombed big time. The recipe features in two of Tarla Dalal‘s books and is on the cover of one of them. Looked gorgeous. It’s like going on a blind date. You see a really good-looking person walking towards you and when he/she says ‘Hi !!’, you almost recoil at the terrible breath.

The tikkis were bland with nothing but salt and green chillies. A waste of good homemade paneer. They had to be salvaged with Date-Tamarind Chutney.

Where’s the value addition in making tikkis out of paneer for a sauce when you can simply cube it and dunk it in? A la Matar Paneer?

As for the sauce, it had too many onions and frying them took forever. At the end of it, the house and everything in it smelt like an onion had rolled off under a couch three months ago and could not be traced.

We made it a year and half ago and forgot about it. Nowadays we don’t have the time to sleep properly, let alone cook or take pics. We found these while scavenging through the drafts for a CLICK Cheese entry.

Do you prefer the first pic? Or this one?

I have no preference, but am compelled to say those who say “Neither” anonymously are rude.

  7. varsha says:

1st one is better, but had the tikki on the front also been brought into view,it would have been more luscious I guess..

  8. Asha says:

True! Paneer can be very bland. I choose to make it Paneer Makhani, so it disappears in the sauce! :D

I do like Paneer in sweet dishes though, half and half, sugar, and crumbled paneer, simmered until thickish. YUMMY!

    Gorgeous photo.

Oh yeah! Pink chaddies and Rama Sene? Yikes!!
In Mangalore, they are assaulting women who go to pubs!! Kannadiga Taliban!!! Bloody idiots!!

  9. Asha says:

Forgot to say. I love the second picture!

  10. Dibs says:

haha non(pasanda) is a great name! The tikkis looks very appetising though!

I would say both these snaps are very good, (the first one is better) by the average blogger standards. It is miles better than I can ever hope to clik. However…… you are not the average blogger! You do have many better snaps!! :-)

  11. veggiebelly says:

I like the second one. The deep black of the skillet and the circular arrangement of the tikkis are nice :)

  12. Mamatha says:

Dibs has taken the words out of my mouth.

I like the concept of the first picture – one tikki out of line from the rest. But the like the circular arrangement and the black background in the second. My vote is for the second one.

  13. Cham says:

I usually I see ur pict and read next ur post. I thought u were experimen with ur new toy (cam)! I like the first pic,the paneer is more visual !

  17. Bharti says:

    second one.
I’ve learned a lot from Tarla Dalal but I’ve had quite a few of her recipes fail too.
Not much value I agree. I use my home made paneer very very guardedly!

  18. kalva says:

    I like the first one.

  19. Raaga says:

    the second one :)

  20. Madhu says:

    I like the first pic..

  21. Shankari says:

I like the 2nd one Jai

  22. sra says:

Liked the blind date analogy. Ugh! First is better.

  23. Miri says:

I liked the second one. About the recipe – I agree, have hated “pasanda” anything for a long time and never tried this recipe of hers….now I know why!

  24. DK says:

I liked the second – Like the Tarla Dala’s cover – it looked v appetizing to me esp. when compared to the first.

Hope everything is going good at ur end…no time to sleep properly sounded quite ominous to me, more so coming from you guys!

  25. Akal says:

    the first one. looks appetizing!

  26. Priya says:

    The first one.

    U guys are hilarious!

  27. Happy Cook says:

Hi hi loved the blind date.I like the first pic.

  28. sia says:

    1st one (peek-a-boo:)

  29. Bhagyashri says:

If it has to be between the two, then I like the first one better…

As for Tarla Dalal, I follow her recipes very closely, some are great while some you can make out from the ingredients list itself, that they are not going to work at all. And having seen a lot of them, I sometimes doubt if she even writes all the recipes herself….

  30. Deb says:

I am glad you noted that you do like a lot of the other recipes in the books. I enjoyed my own Mom’s cooking a lot, but didn’t like every single thing she cooked….

I like the second photo better of the two although they are both striking. I have a thing for circles perhaps. In the first photo the bagels (is that what they are?) and the blurry sauce in the background are a bit distracting visually for me.

Hope you are both well – I agree with earlier poster who said the comment about not enough time to sleep, etc. sounds a bit dire… Take care of yourselves Bee and Jai!

  31. I like the second picture.

I have a few of TD”s recipe books and whatever I made so far has been a big flop. For some reason her recipe lacks a lot of things and usually is pretty bland for our taste. When you are writing a cook book, your recipe should stand out, hers unfortunately is very average for me.

  32. Purnima says:

2nd one! (TD might not even hv tried those, they engage people in trying out stuff n for commercial success publish a lot of it..rely only on the ones hand made by her shown on channels or video or you tube! For tht case, applicable to lot of publishing chefs.-Solely my opinion)

  33. deeba says:

What a bomb Bee, but a very pretty looking one!! LOL…Tarla Dalals recipes are now quite avoidable for me. I’d rather grill my paneer slices in a little olive oil, lemon rind & lime juice & enjoy them! The picture is gorgeous, & i think I’d enjoy just the tikkis! Paneer is my all time fave!

  34. Manasi says:

Dunno why my comment did not show up last evening :(

2nd pic.. but these are a bit hatke than the usual mind blowing pictures we are used to!!:)

  35. Rachna says:

I would still enjoy a flop paneer dish :) , you knew that!

    i like the first one

  36. smitha says:

    Hey,
I’m a new blogger. A unique dish. The second pic looks better. Bummer! that it tastes bland. Looks scrumptious though.

  37. Manggy says:

For some reason the second one, but the first one is quite good too. Too bad about the recipe, though the chutney accompaniment sounds like a winner :)

  38. Soma says:

The First one… Hmmmm however if I think CLICK .. I like none of them if i am allowed to speak my mind. Liked the announcement’s much better. U have to have better pics than this.

Paneer with salt & green chili is bound to be NON pasanda..eating chalk.

  39. sonit says:

The 2nd one is nicer. The first one hurts my eyes…

  40. dipti says:

    first one, try paneer/methi tikki!

  41. purplesque says:

The first one. The in focus-out of focus thing really draws the eye.

With all due respect to Ms. Dalal, I submit that the only thing that must be tikkified is the humble potato. Nothing can ever come close to a spicy aaloo tikki fried with fingernail grease.

  42. arundathi says:

i like the 1st, but the concept of the 2nd is cool. btw, i added some powdered peanuts, cilantro/(or mint) and lots more green chillies and it was pretty good.

  43. Alka says:

Hmm i wish u had added some ginger garlic, some boiled peas and potatoes and yo u would have enjoyed such a yummy preparation and probably called it PASANDAAAA .
Well blunders happen in every kitchen
Well i ain’t an expert photographer like u,but going with my JUST COMMON SENSE, first pic is better :-)

  44. maninas says:

I prefer the second pic. I like the little garland that the tikkis create in thepan.

  45. mallugirl says:

frankly, both look too bland by your high standards..but that’s my opinion:)

  46. Rachna says:

how blasphemous to compare its taste to chalk!!! ah Im hurt! Bland paneer tastes like good bland paneer…ish, ;)

  47. Pooh says:

I vote for the Peek-a-boo Paneer!
