Hall of Mosses

January 5, 2009 |

When everything’s covered in two feet of snow and your butt is freezing, it’s time for some green therapy.

Mosses

These pics are from one of our favourite places - Olympic National Park on the Pacific Coast in Washington state.

The Hoh rain forest is one of the largest temperate rain forests in the world. It abounds in old trees - mainly Big-leaf maples and Sitka spruces. It rains and rains and rains here and rains some more.

These pics were taken on the Hall of Mosses trail two years ago.

It’s a funky place - borderline spooky - like the set of Lord of the Rings.

Ferns

The knobs on these Sitka spruce trees are tumours. Damage to the tip or bud of the spruce causes the growth cells to divide more rapidly that normal to form a swelling or burl. They do not affect the overall tree growth or health.

Mosses, ferns and conifer seedlings cover every surface …

including the rootballs of these fallen trees.

Many Big-leaf maples here are covered in mosses and lichens that weigh almost four times the tree’s foliage. The trees here have short roots because of the abundant rainfall and dense forest cover. The mosses help them retain moisture.

You gotta be on the move … ‘cos if you stand still for a couple of hours,

you’ll get a moss hat.

Back to the real world where there are bills to be paid …

and there’s snow to be shoveled …

Whoa! That is amazing!! The mosses seem to have infected everything, it’s scary and lovely at the same time. I really, really want to go there now! Thanks for sharing :)

Thanks the therapy worked, every around here is gray and gloomy:)

  13. Deb says:

Since you brought up winter weather it is cool and gray here today but miraculously finally raining. We are over 18 inches behind for the year and all our plants are showing signs of water deprivation.

The theme of “it rains here and then it rains some MORE” was a lot easier to appreciate now it is wet again here, even if only for the day.

Thanks for sharing your experience in the moss.

Gorgeous pics, although I don’t want to live there or visit right now! Moss hat looks great.

It’s warm here, last week we had 2 freezing days. My upgraded butt warming car seats were atlast useful for just those 2 days! Hahaha!

It was 80F in Orlando while everybody is freezing to death. So unfair!!
