Bamboo

You don’t have to be a panda to love Bamboo. The Japanese can’t get enough of it. They have used it extensively over the centuries as roofs, floors, beams, columns, utensils, steamers, clothing, armor… you name it. I am sure they would have made good neighbors as well, because I spotted some darn good bamboo fences on my recent visit to Japan. Here are a few examples of striking simplicity and ergonomic design.

The 8th picture reminded me of home(Assam)…we have fences exactly like that. Bamboo is used quite a lot there, and not only to make fences (http://ignca.nic.in/craft152.htm):-)

    great link. thanks. -j

Just before I left Japan about 8 months ago, I took a walk in the local castle’s grounds, and was studying a fence like that in your fourth picture down, with the intention of trying a simlar fence here in Canada someday. I didn’t have my camera so I’m glad to have your picture to look at. While the fence seems simple, the ropes are tied in a very unique way. A lot of ingenuity and art goes into the Japanese kind of “simple”.
