Our first snowstorm

October 11, 2008 | 30 Comments

Last week the daytime temp was 91F (32.77 Celcius), today it was a high of 47F (8.3 Celcius). Yesterday, on the 10th day of October, we had a snowstorm. It pelted and pelted for three hours straight.

It’s the freaking second week of October. And we don’t live in Alaska. (Thank Goodness. I thought our governor speaks gibberish – until I heard Moose-o-lini.)

According to the National Weather Survey, this is the earliest snowfall in this area since recording began in 1898.

This morning … icy grass

So much unnecessary freezing of water. Fall’s my favourite season. I feel cheated ‘cos it seems we won’t have it this year.

I see Mother Nature is “spicing” things up there. Stay safe! (Btw, that “Moose-o-lini comment is priceless…keep them coming!)

  6. Pooh says:

Ack! How’s the veggie patch doing?

    it’s dead.

  7. Mamatha says:

Ur highest is the lowest in my place today. Worrying about ur backyard paradise :(

  10. Uma says:

OMG! Look at that! We don’t get snow in CA, so I like it very much. Though snow is fun, a storm is not invited. Take care.

  11. Manasi says:

WOW! That’s early!! No such luck, ever, in L A :(

  12. Kitt says:

Manisha and I are waiting for the snow. Maybe tonight. It’s raining now, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see some white in the morning.

Fall may come back yet for you.

  13. Ramya says:

The weather around here indicates the winter has approached way too early… I too got to miss ‘The Fall’??? :( ( that’s bad!

BTW, I’ve got a surprise for U both at http://ramya65.blogspot.com/2008/10/butterfly-award.html

  14. sunita says:

Winter already :-( …I love autumn too, glad we’ve not missed it.

  15. Ooooh, I’m not ready for snow! We’re just enjoying the last of the peak fall foliage, and I don’t want to give that up. The first year we lived in Rhode Island, it snowed in early November, and we had snow cover for more than 100 days straight. Too much!

  16. …. and today was our first day over 30C. I went to the botanical gardens and sat by the lotus pond with 3 ducks who decided it was a beautiful day to have a sleep in the sun. I don’t envy you the snowstorm.

Moose-o-lini. :-) . I am so sorry about the veggie garden. I bet you will miss it.

  17. Paz says:

Moose-o-lini!? ROFLMAO! Just too funny! Thanks for the laugh, I need it. ;-)

Autumn is my favorite season, too. Right now, we’re having unseasonably warm weather. I don’t mind as long as it’s NOT snow. Hopefully, this will be the only snow you have till it’s time for the real winter weather. ;-)

I hate winter :( . Here it is still not snowing, but quite cool days. I am not even feeling like it is fall.

  19. Raaga says:

Nature is reacting… last summer, I suffered a heat stroke as the temp went to 47-48… and this year, it rained all thru summer and the tem never went above 40 C… and October is hot hot hot when winter is supposed to be just round the corner!

  20. Rashmi says:

Even last week we had frost ….this weekend is much better and hope the same for next week too…..i luv fall esp New England fall..oh its so so beautiful…hope the weather becomes better for you….

  21. Madhuram says:

Just like Pooh, my first thought was also what happened to the plants? It must be so difficult for you to watch it die right?

  22. Nirmala says:

Snow storm ? Here too in Chennai a depression had formed and its raining heavily since 2 days. the kids were happy at home! and yes Bee u can have those sundals in winter too! But who will visit the beaches then?

  23. Manggy says:

Hmm, I think this may be a freak occurrence… At least I hope for your sake, as an autumn-lover :) What a precipitous drop in temperature! It’s quite shocking for someone who lives near-equatorial!

  24. Cliff says:

I got caught in this very storm.

riding my bike home frantically to move my cactus collection (worth about 500$) into the garage wintering grow chamber.

I was soaked by the time I rode 20 blocks.

this didnt make my ear infection any better.

I have seen storms and snow as late as July 4th in Boise, but never a storm like this in early fall.
all the leaves on the trees are still green! and the trees couldnt handle the weight of both full leaf load, and all the snow load and water that was sticking to the trees (perhaps pine needles are shaped so the snow slides a bit easier?)
tree limbs were falling all over the place.

last year I didnt have to pull the cacti in till november.

  25. Sheetal says:

Yikes! Snowstorm already! It’s been raining all summer and most of fall, our side of the woods … before we know it, we’ll have them snowstorms too :(

  26. rajesh says:

    Moose-o-lini

    Bee u crack me up

  27. Maya says:

Already ??? Its hot weather here..

  28. Shreya says:

oh! no fall is definitely sad…

  29. Kay says:

Fall is the only season I love, too. I find it very comforting.

  30. [...] weekend, the day after we had a ton of snow, we dusted off our camera and took it to a nearby park to scout for some yellows, oranges and reds. [...]
