“The best thing since sliced bread may be bread crust: Researchers in Germany have discovered that the crust is a rich source of antioxidants and may provide a much stronger health benefit than the rest of the bread.” ~ Science Daily

In our opinion, it also tastes better than the crumb.

Pie crust, on the other hand, Bee thinks, is tasteless and sinister. Prove her wrong.

crust (krust) n.
1.
a. The hard outer portion or surface area of bread.
b. A piece of bread consisting mostly of the hard outer portion.
c. A piece of bread that has become hard and dry.
2. A pastry shell, as of a pie or tart.
3. A hard crisp covering or surface.
4. A hard deposit formed on the interior of a wine bottle as the wine matures.

CLICK Crusts in the culinary context. Highlight it in any setting, and send it to us before September 30, 2008.

Whatever you portray must be EDIBLE. Roofing material does not qualify.

DEADLINE: the 30th of September, midnight, Eastern Standard Time.

Srivalli of Cooking 4 All Seasons has organised a fundraiser to help get urgent medical help for Lakshmi, a 28-year old mother of two in Chennai, India. Details of the Donate for a Heart fundraiser HERE.

Lakshmi has coronary heart disease and needs an operation urgently. The public health care system has her on a long waiting list for subsidised treatment and the private hospitals will not admit her until she has money for the operation. By then, it may be too late.

Lakshmi’s condition has worsened since the fundraiser was announced and she has since been hospitalised. The target amount for surgery is $15,000. So far, 16% has been collected.

There is a raffle with some unique prizes on offer. Please check them out.

We are offering a 11×14 poster print for those interested in contributing to the Donate for a Heart fundraiser in the U.S. and Canada. The fundraiser closes on September 15, 2008.

Hee! I was waiting for this! Lemme see what I can submit! :) (By the way, isn’t the crust made of the same things as the crumb? Boggles my mind how there can be more antioxidants there, especially as it’s the part of the bread that has been exposed to oxygen… Unless the high heat is a factor.)

I’m really sorry, this is my first time entering and I’m a total photography newbi, or more specifically, a bit computer illiterate. I think that my picture might not have been the correct size, but I’ve figured out how to re-size it. I then tried to send you a new photo and I’m not sure it went through. I’m so so so sorry for flooding your inbox like that! I hope you got the correct photo. Again, my apologies.
