I hate to cook.

July 1, 2008 |

Yeah.

I hate doing the dishes and cleaning the kitchen even more.

I love visiting friends ‘cos they will cook for me.

I hate having guests ‘cos we have to cook for them. Let me rephrase that. I love having guests when J cooks for them.

I especially hate having guests who think it’s the female’s duty to cook. When we have such guests, I pretend to be busy elsewhere and J does it all.

When J starts cooking, they get all concerned that he’ll hurt his wrists, poor thing, ‘cos being male makes you a spehhshul snowflake. Isn’t he so gifted and considerate, ‘cos he can COOK!!!!

I don’t believe in making ’sacrifices for my faaaamilly’ by slaving over a hot stove. That doesn’t make me a saint. It makes me a sucker.

Cooking is not a virtuous activity. It’s a freaking chore that I try to avoid if I can.

Why do we need to eat meals with so many components? Why can’t they make one capsule that you can pop once a day or something?

Cooking is a waste of time. You can buy food. Time should be spent on useful things like sipping margaritas.

Oooh … that felt goood.

Dee is going to love you for this post. Sometimes I hate cooking for a different reason, because my J doesn’t step in the kitchen except to get some water. We don’t have enough storage space in our apartment and I’m using the dishwasher as a storage. So I also HATE doing the dishes!

I loathe the pigeon-holing of a person based on their gender. In fact, I relish busting those stereotypical misconceptions :) Men who cook at home are awesome.

Are you guys doing the raffle drawings now?

    just for this prize.

  7. Manisha on July 1, 2008 10:01 am

Yet you have a food blog. You are a paradox, m’dear. Unless it’s you who does all the writing while poor poor J does the cooking, cleaning and clearing. Snowflake? He’ll melt! Move him away from the stove now!

Congrats to Chuck Lai! May your home smell of jackfruit!

  8. arundathi on July 1, 2008 10:02 am

omg - that is me. i hate the fact that V gets so much sympathy just for making a friggin dal, while its my “duty” to whip up delicious complete meals at all times of the day. how true.

  9. OhioMom on July 1, 2008 10:07 am

I love to cook when the leaves turn red, yellow and orange and I know the cool Fall has arrived, I love to cook and bake in the dead of winter, the smell of fresh bread baking and a pot of hearty soup or stew simmering on the stovetop … BUT … come Spring and Summer I don’t know why everyone can’t be like me and pluck a piece of fresh fruit or a veggie and enjoy the fruits of Mother Nature …. alas I am the Chief Cook and Bottlewasher and because this position means the person is overworked and underpaid I can’t get a single applicant for the job.

    What’s for dinner Bee ?

  10. Asha on July 1, 2008 11:23 am

When I was newly married, I didn’t know how to cook. When my MIL saw Arvind helping me in the kitchen, she immediately called her husband and both called my dad to complain about me “slaving” him!!
I hate guests too even though I don’t mind the cooking part, specially when they stay 1 or 2 nights and they don’t count me as a human being ie A’s relatives!
I have even stopped inviting Indian couples for dinner here after they walked in 2 hrs late and didn’t even apologize, happened twice! Civility?! :D

  11. Pooja on July 1, 2008 12:17 pm

Each word of your post is feels like coming straight from my heart too…
“slaving” husbands as they just help in cooking ha ha ha… then what would they name -for a person in house who do almost everything ???

  12. Pooja on July 1, 2008 12:27 pm

and yeah…. that capsule idea is definitely great :D

  13. RJ on July 1, 2008 2:55 pm

Wow! I am sure many feel like this including myself. But I thought you loved cooking, considering this gorgeous blog you have.
I would be more inclined to cook if some can do the prep work and cleaning the kitchen for me. :D

  14. Cham on July 1, 2008 3:32 pm

Bee , if u ve some upcoming guests , show them this post :) If I ve enough bucks, I will definetly hire a cook but not capsule option :) I thought J is a talented photographer but now all those yummy food has been made by J?

  15. pauaprincess on July 1, 2008 4:40 pm

Hurt his wrists? And yet only men can bbq! Funny that their wrists don’t get hurt and they don’t get burned cooking with all that fire!

  16. indosungod on July 1, 2008 4:50 pm

Bee, don’t what brought that on but I can understand 100% what you mean. I love cooking on weekend when I have the time to cook. I hate cooking on weekdays after coming back from work.

  17. bhavani on July 1, 2008 5:08 pm

gee, bee! so now we know what you were muttering under your breath when you’re making all that great food when we visited! (just kidding!) anyways, cooking is fun, and you know it. and we know you know it. its just not fun all the time, buddy!!!

  25. Rachna on July 1, 2008 7:19 pm

I hate it when hubby cooks and everyone oohs and aahs over his dish and if i make the same dish (or alternately a thousand accompaniments to his dish), its ok…its expected of me…grrrrrrr

  26. Nirmala on July 1, 2008 8:46 pm

Its the words from thousand hearts :) I can make a grand dinner or lunch on my own interest but not a single toast if somebody orders. And I too hate doing the dishes. Here atleast we could have the luxury for hiring people to do the same. After all these years my father steps inside the kitchen to make coffee for the entire family religiously everyday. Waking up with a steaming mug of coffee is something the everyday luxury he gives us!

  27. Shibani on July 1, 2008 9:12 pm

ha ha ha it is very true that boys are sympathised when they whip a simple dish esp when there are guests who strongly beileve that cooking and cleaning the untensils is only meant for women. My husband helps me a lot and doesn;t care what people say.I feel good.

  28. Jayashree on July 1, 2008 9:21 pm

M loves to cook….and one of the dishes whenever we have company is always made by him….I still remember the way a lot of my friends (male and female) used to look at him when he said he actually liked to cook….with a puzzled and amused expression on their face…

  29. Bharti on July 1, 2008 9:33 pm

    Arre yaar….EXACTLY!
I hate to cook (but I love to cook).
I hate the dirty dishes even more. Luckily my better half does not cook but will gladly clear the sink and sweep the floor.

  30. Jyothsna on July 1, 2008 10:43 pm

You echo my thoughts! Someone asked me why I have a foodblog when I don’t like to cook a lot. I replied I love to eat!! :)

  31. A&N on July 1, 2008 11:06 pm

A cooks fantastically, while I cannot. A is my husband. The stuff I try out from blogs, recipe books does not come out well, the way I want it. While he just flicks through the book/blog, and comes up with divine stuff. That is just the way it is. Blah :)

Sometimes, thanks to his talent he points our faults in my cooking until my father in law who cannot boil water asked him to shut up :D He told me that I should have gotten married to someone who did not know how to cook so that my cooking could be appreciated :D Sorry for the long comment!

  32. Sweta on July 1, 2008 11:33 pm

hahahahahahaha..now i know how it feels when your thoughts become someone else’s words..well said! :)

    So many hate-to-cook-love-to-eat-have-a-food-blog folks!

But tell me why does what people say matter so much? Especially people who don’t matter much anyway! :-D

I absolutely love to cook.but I agree with you. if anyone starts taking me for granted, I will stop it completely!
popping food capsule? - exactly that’s what my husband thinks!!
Dishes/cleanup, etc is deligated to my hubby, so I can enjoy cooking!!:-D

  39. Anupama on July 2, 2008 4:47 am

Oh Bee, I have never before agreed to anything more. Although I cannot claim that my cooking does not get praised, it is a tiresome thing at the best of times. I was just scared to admit it till I read your thoughts on it.
    Go girl Go!!!

  40. Vandy on July 2, 2008 5:06 am

Oh, i’m so surprised to see this post from you bee.. I thought you do love to cook, seeing the wonderful posts here! But I sure agree with you.. I don’t like having guests over either and making things in bulk! almost always mess things up.. Instead, like to try out and cook new dishes in small quantities and that too only on weekends.. Hate to cook after a long day of work in weekdays .. but have to.. coz G doesn’t cook at all :(

  41. Rashmi on July 2, 2008 6:13 am

hate to cook, hate doing the dishes even more..yes, yes!
Cereal & fruit are my saviour!

  42. Latha on July 2, 2008 7:10 am

hehehe Fianlly out of the system! I can add my rant here too! I love to cook but wish i could do it only maybe once a month - only something exotic! I hate to cook everyday mundane meals - BORING! And i hate cooking Indian food even more -cause its so goddamn tedious! Hate it! Also wish we lived in a better place where food choices were more- this place sucks and my life sucks! hahahahaha.
And u know what- dont get me started on the “husbands cooking topic” - i hate that! K could not make a decent meal in this lifetime!
    Good one Bee!

  44. Tee on July 2, 2008 8:40 am

I agree with you on so many things…especially guests sighing over how i make my husband work in the kitchen…poor thing! How I hate that…if i could i would make all those guests come and cook for me ;)

  45. sunshinemom on July 2, 2008 12:09 pm

Mine is a love hate relationship! I hate it on somedays, and some times P has to drag me out:) Thankfully I do not have folks expecting me to cook (P’s frndz. know that quite well:). Hmmmm….. when someone feel its your duty the very thought takes away the fun of cooking!

  46. Anjali on July 2, 2008 5:22 pm

A food blogger saying it! I’ll say these are phases we all go thru :). Bee you are lucky. Some men don’t like to eat, they love guests and poor lady of the house!!!
