CLICK: YELLOW PHOTO CONTEST WINNERS

This is a special edition of CLICK, tinged with sadness and filled with hope.
Yellow is the happiest colour in the spectrum. It signifies hope and enlightenment. Though the work of the LiveStrong Foundation, it has also come to signify the fight against cancer.

This month’s CLICK is in honour of Briana Brownlow – ‘Bri’ to her friends.
CLICK YELLOW for Bri. It can be can ingredient, a dish, a concept, cookware, a location – anything in a culinary setting – and send it to us before June 30, 2008.
CLICK is a food photography contest. Please stick to the culinary theme.
This edition of CLICK has special prizes for the winners and is our means of showing our support for a very special friend and fellow blogger. RULES, PANEL OF JUDGES AND DETAILS BELOW.

Bri is one of the 5% of women diagnosed with breast cancer under the age of 30. That was two and a half years ago. In her words,
“I was 28 … I was told I would need a mastectomy (full removal) of my right breast. It was horrifying and surreal. Particularly since I watched my mom go through her diagnosis of breast cancer, a mastectomy and chemotherapy 14 years earlier. She was just 41 and died within six months.”
In August 2007, she started Figs With Bri – a serene, beautiful space where she shares with us her creative experiments with wonderful local organic ingredients. A month and a half ago, her worst fears came true. She learnt that her cancer has returned and metastasized to her lungs, her lymph nodes and several areas in her bones and is at Stage IV. (More at Figs with Bri)
As the great Lance Armstrong said about people like himself battling cancer: “We have two options, medically and emotionally: give up, or fight like hell.”

Bri has chosen to fight like hell. Though fatigued and in pain, she makes us smile with her calm reassuring e-mails about how she’s feeling stronger and focusing on healing. She continues to blog with great clarity about her options, and enthuse us with her beautiful culinary creations.
Some of you have fought your own battles with cancer and many of you have had family members and close friends in Bri’s shoes. You are aware of the great toll cancer takes on the whole family. There are never-ending rounds of hospital visits to be made, different diagnoses to be sought, special meals to be prepared, time off to be taken from work … and huge bills to be paid.
How huge? To give you an idea, in the past two years, Bee has had two medical scares – one involved one MRI and one minor surgery, another involved one MRI and a physical exam. We had insurance coverage. Yet, our out-of-pocket costs for these preliminary screenings (that turned out negative for cancer) were close to 3,000 dollars.
It’s mind-blogging to contemplate how much those diagnosed with cancer have to shell out each time they visit the physician or the hospital, even with insurance. Ever since her cancer returned, Bri has had several rounds of diagnoses and tests. She’s approaching her treatment differently from two years ago, using alternatives like mistletoe extract injections (Iscador), Xeloda (a tablet form of chemo), powerfully healing herbs, a special organic diet, and much more.
We were distressed to learn that her health insurance has turned down her request to cover the holistic alternatives which she would like to try.
Bri needs to explore ALL treatment options, not just those her insurance is willing to cover. So we asked her for a number. How much would a year’s treatment cost in addition to insurance coverage? Could we help her raise that amount?
The answer was 12,000 U.S. dollars – that’s just for ONE YEAR. Four months of intensive chemo and surgery two years ago have given her a fair idea of what the monetary costs will be. Bri was concerned about putting out an appeal for such a large amount and wondered whether it was worthwhile to do so. Yes, it does appear daunting, but as Norman Vincent Peale said:
“Become a possibilitarian. No matter how dark things seem to be or actually are, raise your sights and see possibilities – always see them, for they’re always there.”
When Bri and bloggers like her give so selflessly of their time, talent and knowledge, they do not expect anything in return. When she is faced with trying circumstances we, as fellow bloggers and readers, cannot direct the wind. However, as an acknowledgement of the positive impact she has had on our lives, we could at least try to steady the sails.
Right now, Bri needs to focus every ounce of her energy on healing. She is surrounded by a very loving family of artists – her husband Marc is a graphic and product designer. (See his site), her parents-in law Cynthia and Bill are web and graphic designers. They need to focus single-mindedly on caring for her and for each other, rather than worry about where the money for her treatment is going to come from.
We need 500 people willing to support Bri with a contribution of at least 25 dollars. That would help cover Bri’s out-of-pocket treatment costs for the next 12 months. Would you like to be one of them?
This edition of CLICK is more than a photo event. It is a fundraiser for our dear Briana. She was 15 when she saw her mother die of breast cancer. Now, she’s waging her own war.

I donated. Usually I don’t because I hate singling people out, saying that one deserves my attention and another doesn’t. Still, every time I went to navigate away I kept wondering how I would feel if I had cancer and I didn’t have enough money to spend on treatments. The niggling feeling that I could help but I could also choose not to was bothering me too much.
I really hope that my donation helps and wish a full recovery. I can’t really imagine what it’s like .

A large number of people all over the world suffer and battle the dreaded ‘cancer’. In the so-called modern medical system hardly anyone survives it.
In India Swami Ram Dev is spreading the message of yoga, which includes Pranayams and several hundreds of people have vouched to have cured their cancer by doing Pranayams regularly for about two hours daily. one can visit the web site http://www.divyayoga.com to learn more about the Pranayams.
(Swamy Ram Dev would be in US (Los Angeles) from July 9 to July 13 to conduct one camp for teaching Pranayam.)
the only hope in the world against diseases is yoga and especially the Pranayams, which are one of the eight principles of Yoga.
Wow-this is an incrible program that I have been fortunate enough to stumble upon-I’ll check back often!

THANK-YOU FOR PROVIDING THIS FOR HER, HER FAMILY AND FOR ALL OF US. All ya’ll (its a southern expression) have ignited my hope in the power and generosity of our human spirit and pocketbooks. As you know Bri is an amazing person, wisdom beyond her years, funny, creative, sassy too and oh so generous. I know this support will be of benefit to her and Mark and her family beyond what we can imagine. I hope people will continue to contribute to the end date in July even after the $12,000 goal is met. I suspect any additional funds will be put to great use. p.s. I love your site.
