Chokecherry Tree

May 13, 2008 | 19 Comments

We planted it two and a half years ago. This particular variety (Prunus Virginiana Canada Red or ‘Schubert’) looks different each season.

Mid-April

Every year, for one week in spring, it bursts into bloom.

Mid-May

The flowers are delicate and fill the backyard with a strong, sweet aroma.

After 7-10 days, they fall off and the green leaves turn burgundy. Birds love its berries.

    Hello Jay and Bee,

The photos and writeups in your blog are really inspiring.
I am new to gardening, just on trial and error basis. Just curious to know if the pebbles below the Chokecherry tree acts as mulch or just to highlight your landscape? Its a
neat idea, i am just planing to do it around my Magnolia.

    Thanks in advance,
    Anika

actually both. the gravel reflects some of the heat hitting the ground, keeping it moist. for the most part trees are not affected by loss of moisture at the top as they have a large root system. the gravel or mulch could be more useful for shrubs and small plants. we have landscape fabric underneath to keep out the weeds. – jai

I planted 2 chokecherries 10 yrs ago. For the past 2 yrs they have been covered in some kind of canker that makes them most unpleasant to look at until they are leaf-covered. Am thinking of cutting them both down, as I cant seem to find out what this desease is.
