Iced, Spiced Southern Coffee

April 20, 2008 |

Spring is here. Time to go skiing and light a crackling fire. In the second week of April we had snow, killing our tomato plants. Then just to remind us that it really is spring, it snowed again this afternoon.

We’re beginning to wonder if we went to sleep in the Northern Hemisphere and woke up in New Zealand, where winter is not far away. But what the heck, we’ll sit on the freezing porch and sip some iced spiced Southern coffee and pretend it’s spring.

Iced tea is a regular, traditional drink in the southern U.S.A. Most Southern homes will have a jug of sweet black tea chilling in the fridge year round, ‘cos they have relatively warm weather.

In the rest of the U.S. iced tea makes an appearance in spring and summer, and is usually served unsweetened, with or without lemon.

This is a variation with coffee we found in a book called The Cook’s Guide to Spices. While our ingredient list is the same, the proportions are different.

Unlike the iced coffees at some of the coffeehouses, this one has no milk. It’s flavoured with cloves, cinnamon and some booze.

Iced, Spiced Southern Coffee

2 cups strong black coffee
3 cloves
one 2-inch stick cinnamon
2 to 3 tablespoons maple syrup or sugar
2 tablespoons coffee liqueur (like Tia Maria or Kahlua)
**you can use Bailey’s Irish Cream for a different flavour
1/2 cup ice-cold water
1/2 cup crushed ice cubes

3 simple tips for making perfect coffee

Make the coffee, add the cloves and cinnamon to it when it is hot and let it steep for about an hour. Strain and add cold water, maple syrup, liqueur and crushed ice.

Our post dedicated to this spice is @ A box of cloves

Iced, Spiced Southern Coffee is our entry for Think Spice: Cloves, hosted by dear Gretchen @ Canela & Comino.

Meh. See that is why I haven’t planted anything. We’re going through a typical spring in Colorado. We had about 3 inches of snow last week after 2 days of sunshine and a high of 82F before plummeting down to 32F in less than 24 hours. Gorgeous weather this weekend though although I have several excuses why I did not go the Farmers’ market and/or plant anything. :D

Gee, that looks really, really icy. We don’t get snow here where I live, but we often get frost. Yesterday was just like Winter already and it was 6 degrees. Now when I see this photo I thought you’re already enjoying Spring…? Isn’t the world changing?

Hola couple! Here in Barcelona the weather is wild too! We don’t have water in our reservoirs, it’s April and it’s cold as March, 2 days ago we had little white stones falling from the sky…

This spiced coffe you proposed has seduced me!!! I’ll try it for sure. Would it work with our strong coffee too?

dunno. if your teeth turn black, hope you have some good toothpaste. :D
