Beautiful pictures. When I first saw Seagulls after coming to US, I was so excited because “Jonathan Livingston Seagull” by Richard Bach is one of my favorite books. So as I see the first seagull here, it reminds me of the indomitable spirit of Jonathan…As Richard bach says, the spirit that lies within all of us…

Kho!! Kho-Kho pose – Love Seagulls! Beautifully captured! Loved the ships n gulls in clear water at dawn!

    Warning – mini rant follows

Sea Gulls? As opposed to what – “Land” Gulls? I blame Richard Bach (of the rather excellent Jonathan Livingston Seagull) for this travesty and insult to the more than 20 species of gulls found along the coasts of the US.

These are Herring Gulls. Beautiful and among the largest of gulls, they are pretty much endemic along both american coasts. One does not appreciate the size and beauty of these nearly hen sized birds with the 5 foot wingspan.

They are clearly distinguished by the small red spot on their beak.

    Lovely pictures, as always.

Sorry for the mini rant, but as might be obvious from my previous posts birds are somewhat of a passion for me.

    rant noted. :D title changed. – b.

  7. cynic says:

Oh, wow, that was quick. Thanks guys.

So, here is the official list of North American Gulls: (the most common ones in bold…)
Laughing, Franklin’s, Little, Common Black Headed, Bonaparte’s, Heermann’s, Black-Tailed, Mew, Ring-Billed, California, Herring, Thayer’s, Icelandic,Lesser Black Backed, Slaty Backed, Yellow Footed, western, Glaucous Winged, Glaucous, Great Black backed, Black Legged Kittiwake, Red Legged Kittiwake, Ross’s, Sabines, Ivory.

    Sea Gulls indeed.

    Hmph!

So, if you are ever on a beach and you see lots of gulls, feel free to hold up a small fish (preferably dead…) and they will come and pick it right out your hands.

I can hear the comment now: ‘Right out of the hand? More like right out of the mind, the bird brain!’

btw.. i really appreciated your rant about being rude to the hosts over at the ‘other blog’. I wonder what it is about people that makes them so touchy about their religious convictions that they feel compelled to jump on anybody who chooses to disagree.

    Mind blowing pics!!

  9. Watch out, cynic! She will write about you next! So these are all herring gulls then?

Um, and no land gulls but according to a young member of the household there is another kind:
Why do seagulls fly over the sea?
Because if they flew over the bay, they would be bagels.
    Get it?

    signed,
    !Manisha
    (i.e. Not Manisha, get it?)

  10. cynic says:

They sure look like herring gulls. The problem is, once you get up in the Halifax area, the atlantic gulls become more common. Most large gulls have that tell-tale red spot on their beaks and once you get past that, positive ID becomes a matter of how close you can get.

    Birds are so much fun.

    Happy Easter y’awl!

  11. Pel says:

I love watching and listening to gulls. They land in our yard sometimes and terrify the cats.

  12. Linda says:

Do you think I can substitute a black-legged kittiwake for a herring gull?

    Loved the pics!

  13. bhavani says:

seagulls or not, the photos are beautiful, as always. :horn:

  14. rashmi says:

  15. NĂºria says:

You are so lucky! YOu have the ability to get/see the beauty in simple things and… you also are able to show it to us! Thanks! I always have a great time seeing your pics!
