Gray Wolves

March 3, 2008 |

The gray wolf, also called timber wolf, is the largest wild member of the Canidae family and an ice age survivor originating during the Late Pleistocene around 300,000 years ago.

Historically, most Native Americans revered gray wolves, trying to emulate their cunning and hunting abilities. However, wolves became nearly extinct in the lower 48 states in the early part of the 20th century because settlers believed wolves caused widespread livestock losses. Constantly persecuted and targeted by large scale predator eradication programs sponsored by the federal government, wolves have been pursued with more passion and determination than any other animal in U.S. history. By the time wolves were finally protected by the Endangered Species Act of 1973, they had been exterminated from the lower 48 states, except for a few hundred that inhabited extreme northeastern Minnesota.

Second only to humans in their adaption to climate extremes throughout the world, gray wolves were equally at home in the deserts of Israel, the deciduous forests of Virginia and the frozen Arctic of Siberia. Within the continental United States, gray wolves once ranged from coast to coast and from Canada to Mexico. (Source)

After being exterminated in the early 20th century, wolves were reintroduced into central Idaho and Yellowstone National Park in the mid-1990s. (A few wolves had also begun re-colonizing Montana.)

Now that wolf numbers are up to 1500, the governments of Idaho, Montana and Wyoming are attempting to remove them from the ‘endangered species list’. This will allow for the resumption in wolf-hunting. Environmental groups are trying to reverse this through legal action.

I read about this — the pending removal from protection. What a bunch of rubbish. Did you know that wolves and moose keep one another in check on Isle Royale (now a National Park in the northern reaches of Lake Superior) :)

    Beautiful photos, as always.

  26. sonia says:

Someone needs to protect these lovely animals from humans. We have robbed them of their hunting lands and reduced them to living behind fences.Tragic.

  27. really great pics

  28. Ed Haas says:

Yes I agree the pics are great. People, your missing the point. “Now that the population is up to 1500, they are being taken off the endangered list.” When at one time thier range was coast to coast and north to south. THEY ARE STILL ENDANGERED PEOPLE!

  29. Daisey says:

These are some great pictures. They show the true nature of a gray wolf.
