Date-Tamarind-Nut Treats

November 14, 2007 |

Pecan, tamarind and date

This is a fusion of two wonderful recipes -
Jaggery-Tamarind-Cumin Candy from Mahanandi and
Cherry-Date-Nut Balls from FatFree Vegan Kitchen

We love the date-tamarind combination, highlighted in Khajur-Imli Chutney.

Our recipe has sweet dates, tart tamarind and crunchy pecans, spiced up with ginger, cumin and salt.

Sweet tamarind in the pod, available in Southeast Asian stores, is much sweeter than the sour deseeded tamarind used for cooking. The latter works fine in this recipe.

DATE-TAMARIND NUT TREATS

Makes a dozen

1/2 cup deseeded and chopped dates
1/2 cup deseeded and chopped tamarind, with strings removed
**we used sweet tamarind. If using sour, adjust quantity according to taste.
a big pinch of salt
a pinch of dried ginger powder
a big pinch of cumin seeds
2-3 tablespoons toasted and powdered nuts (we used pecans)
1/4 cup coarsely crushed nuts (we used pecans)

1. Pound the dates, tamarind, cumin, ginger and salt to a paste in a mortar and pestle.

2. Add the nut powder and knead to a firm consistency.

3. Make a dozen balls.

4. Moisten them with a drop of water and roll them in the crushed nuts.

that is a real good treat…and no cooking or baking too…so when you pound these..do they just disintegrate or do you have to make them sort of pulpy?

  9. sia on November 14, 2007 8:40 am

  17. Suganya on November 14, 2007 10:24 am

Tamarind loses most of its sweetness when dried. Love anything with fresh tamarind.

    Inspiring pictures!

I bought some tamarind the other day after drooooooling over the pic you had posted. I thought I’d make a treat that was my dad’s fave when he was growing up - gul, tamarind and red chilli powder rolled into small balls - but the tamarind was just too inviting on its own.

i can’t resist them either. but i plan to try the gul and mirchi thing. what proportion? - bee
