Thank you for your participation and enthusiastic response.

On October 12, the International Food Policy Research Institute published the Global Hunger Index for 2007. India is ranked at 94, out of 118 nations, well behind China (47th) and Pakistan (88th). (See the report in PDF format HERE)

India is the second-fastest growing economy in the world. Yet, India has 40 per cent of the world’s underweight children under five. More than half of all children with low birth weight are born in South Asia. Most of these children belong to lower castes and ethnic minorities.

By 2015, South Asia will be home to half the world’s poor people, the vast majority of whom will live in rural areas. We urge you to go to your pantry and take a look at the grains, lentils and spices lining your shelves. Some of the farmers who produced them - and their children - are starving. It takes a global agency to point this out. Reading a large section of the media, one wouldn’t have a clue.

As we type this post, someone somewhere will lose the battle with hunger.

This is unacceptable. If countries like Libya and Cuba can top the list in terms of progress made in alleviating hunger, why can’t India? Why wait for the government to make a difference when we can?

“If you can’t feed a hundred people, then just feed one.” - Mother Teresa

Here’s the opportunity.

Feed a Hungry Child is a not-for-profit charitable organisation formed by fellow food blogger, Viay K Narayanan of My Dhaba.

FAHC’s aim is to fight hunger, one child at a time. The organisation has already begun supporting a pilot batch of 14 children and their families in south India since April 2007.

FAHC aims to collect 3,360 U.S. dollars by October 23. We, along with our fellow food bloggers, and some generous supporters, are determined to make this happen. Every penny goes directly to the children and their families. FAHC does not have any paid employees or any other direct administrative expenses.

A small act of generosity from each of us can make a huge difference to a whole family’s life. While most people around us are gearing up for the festival season, there are some who cannot afford two decent meals a day.

What can be more gratifying than seeing the smiles that FAHC has brought them?

We are deeply grateful to those who have already contributed to the cause.

Indira of Mahanandi is co-ordinating the effort on behalf of us, food bloggers, to reach FAHC’s fundraising goal.

A host of bloggers, as well as celebrity chef Suvir Saran are offering some exciting prizes through a raffle as part of this fund drive.

Any contribution of or above 25 U.S. dollars is eligible for the raffle draw.

TWO prizes from Mahanandi

These include a cookbook (Grains, Greens and Grated Coconuts by Ammini Ramachandran) and a gift box of spice extracts (donated by Anjali Damerla of Supreme Spice) .

TWO prizes from Jugalbandi

The winners will get a copy each of

benlong.jpg

This is the latest version of the hugely popular digital photography manual by Ben Long that covers everything from the inner workings of the camera to the subtle intricacies of image editing software. More about it HERE.

SIX prizes from Suvir Saran

We had originally planned to offer Suvir Saran’s hot new cookbook, American Masala as one of the prizes.

suvircontact.jpg

Suvir is renowned as a chef, author and teacher. Many here know him through his beautiful blog. He’s also a guy with a big heart.

How big?

Bee wrote to him, requesting him to sign a copy of his book for the winner. Within minutes, she got a response.

Suvir was keen to donate these SIX prizes for the raffle draw.

TWO lucky winners will get signed copies of American Masala from Suvir himself.

suviram-copy.jpg

This book, co-authored with Raquel Pelzel, exemplifies Suvir’s “cooking-without-borders” approach, and in his own words, reflects, “the rich American melting pot that brings together the flavors of Lebanon, Morocco, the American Northeast, Midwest, and South, and mixes them with the tastes of my homeland, both in India and New York City. They don’t pretend to be tedious or predictable, but instead comforting, simple (never simplistic), and attainable. These are dishes meant to delight and nourish.”

According to Publishers Weekly:

Although the recipes in Saran’s aptly titled second cookbook share no unifying principle apart from their deliciousness—whoever heard of Macaroni and Cheese keeping company with Mushroom and Rice Biryani Casserole?—they complement one another in a mysterious way. Such eclecticism reflects how Saran, chef and co-owner of Dévi in New York City, cooks for his family and enormous circle of Tupperware-toting friends. Unlike many other chefs’ signature dishes, which originate in a restaurant kitchen, Saran’s most inspired creations begin at home. When this cooking-without-borders approach succeeds, as it mostly does, the results taste like wild siblings of the original: bolder, stronger, deeper.

A peek into the book HERE.

TWO others will get signed copies of Suvir’s first book, Indian Home Cooking, which he co-authored with Stephanie Lyness.

suvirihc-copy.jpg

Juliette Rossant writes:

… Suvir has a mission: “I want to give Indian cuisine the pedigree it deserves” — among fellow Indians as well as others — rejecting fusion cuisine (by which he means using Indian ingredients with French techniques) in the quest for perfect Indian technique to elevate humble home cooking. In the process, he may have created the first “Pan-Indian” cuisine. Although … a Hindu and vegetarian himself, his cooking embraces the whole Subcontinent, from the Moghul meat-based cuisine of the North to vegetarian dishes of the South.

The TWO highest contributors get dinner for two (wine included)

at Suvir’s acclaimed restaurant

Dévi

8 East 18th Street between 5th Avenue and Broadway, New York City

Review from the New York Times:

There are restaurants that bring you back to yourself and those that spirit you away. Dévi belongs to the latter group, delivering a heady retreat even when the odds against such an escape are longest.

… Dévi has chefs, Suvir Saran and Hemant Mathur, who do not feel bound by your expectations for Indian food. Yes, there is chicken tikka masala on the menu, but you have to hunt for it, and if you ask your server for suggestions, he will steer you in less tired directions.
