No Photoshop??? No Problem.

Use GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program)
The download is available HERE.
If this is the first time you’re installing the GIMP, you will also need GTK+ 2 Runtime Environment from HERE.
GIMP has a lot of the image processing capability that Photoshop has. We haven’t used it, but some of our geek friends have, and they say it’s easier to use than Photoshop.
Best of all, it’s FREE.
GIMP tutorials, including how to edit photos HERE.
Do any of you use GIMP? How does it compare with Photoshop? We use the ancient Photoshop Elements 2.0.
Is GIMP superior to that? Please give us your feedback.
ETA: Tip from pauaprincess:
Try getting Neat Image, it is a digital noise reduction software tool, which allows you to work without a flash with a lower light and eliminate the noise. It’s a free trial download and as long as your images aren’t bigger than I think 1000×1000, you can continue to use it for free.
Warning: Too much neat image will make people’s skin look like a barbie doll A little neat image, will make your noisy photo look great.

I’ve used GIMP, on linux. To be very honest, I installed photoshop recently on my windows partition, and found it a bit painful. If GIMP for windows is the same, then you got a good thing going.
cheers
GIMP is pretty cool and there are some really freaky math manipulation things that you can do in GIMP that you can’t in Photoshop. I find Photoshop easier to use than GIMP – maybe because I am more familiar with it.
have downloaded it, will let you know how I fare
Thank you great people!
Hope to improve with your tips!
I brought hubby to your website the day before yesterday and showed him what amazing blogs and amazing pictures are like!
I have started blogging recently and just added a link to your site from mine, hope that is okay
I used Gimp a little, prior to getting hold of CS2. I’ve used photoshop in various form for years and found the gimp software a little cumbersome because I was used to photoshop if that makes sense? I do know ppl who swear by it. Another trick, try getting neat image, it is a digital noise reduction software tool, which allows you to work without a flash with a lower light and eliminate the noise. It’s a free trial download and as long as your images aren’t bigger than I think 1000×1000, you can continue to use it for free.
I don’t have the link handy but google neat image, warning too much neat image will make peoples skin look like a barbie doll

I have used GIMP on linux – I think for someone who’s used to photoshop, GIMP = steep learning curve. I dint like the interface and though you find features of photoshop, its like learning “how to do this and that” all over again. In my experience GIMP isn’t superior to Photoshop in terms of features but I have generally found it faster in performance (or is it just linux?).
I haven’t really used Photoshop or GIMP for editing Photos much – so I cant comment on that. I think Picasa would also work well for basic photo editing.
This is very informative. thanks for it.
[...] get GIMP. it’s a free software that works like Photoshop. It’s useful for a lot of image editing [...]
