Olan (Mystery Veggie - I)
June 25, 2007 |

If you are a Malayalee, you are likely to have a few recipes with red cowpeas or Vanpayar in your repertoire.
See Inji’s creations here and here, and this Erisherry from Pravs.
A common name across India for these beans is red chori.
These small kidney-shaped beans native to tropical Africa are produced on the plant Vigna unguiculata.
As explained in Grains, Greens and Grated Coconuts,
This annual legume was domesticated in West Africa around 3000 BC and reached India around 1500 BC. Just like the chickpea, it was carried to the New World by the Portuguese and the Spaniards in the seventeenth century. In the United States, cowpeas are grown in Texas, Georgia and California.

… and a mystery vegetable.
Traditionally, winter melon/ash gourd/white pumpkin is used. (See that recipe here)
Name the MYSTERY VEGGIE. Only the first guess counts.

I use zucchini to make Olan and it turns out wonderful too. Also, try substituting the red beans with black eyed beans - gives the dish a whole new texture.
