Berries

June 29, 2007 | 25 Comments

Each evening, we get a few raspberries and strawberries from our veggie garden.

The raspberry bush has taken over a huge area, and it’s hard for us to reach the strawberries, that are hidden below its dense and thorny foliage. The ants have a field day feasting on our strawberries. The few that we do get are luscious.

We have two varieties.

STORING BERRIES

Berries are highly perishable. We collect them in a ziplock bag and keep them in the freezer. When the bag fills up, we slightly thaw and blend the strawberries into smoothies or sorbets.

Strawberry-Banana Sorbet

Likewise with raspberries.

FRUIT ICECUBES

We also make icecubes with fruits or fruit juices.

For strawberries, watermelons, oranges, etc, just puree the fruit and set into icecubes.

For raspberries, strain the fruit pulp before setting.

Add them to lemonades and alcoholic drinks, or blend them into icecreams and sorbets.

Question: That pink b/g for strawberry ice cubes – is it paper b/g or digitally added? Looks uniform thru’out.

You lucky souls to have a patch for gardening. I live in a concrete jungle :(

A picture is worth a thousand words! I am totally absolutely WOWED! That strawberry is perfection, and the squat one is so cute :) And the red is so red, and… :D

thanks…wanted to highlight the top part and the stem of the berry. the pale green and pink combination is quite interesting. most pix i’ve seen focus primarily on the bottom part of the berry or the flesh inside. glad you like it. –jai

raspberry plant is to the top right of the second picture. this pic was taken in may 2006 when we just planted

    2. http://jugalbandi.info/2007/03/vegetable-patch/
raspberry plant is to the top left of the second picture. this pic was taken in mar 2007 when the leaves just started to come out. you can see how big it had grown over last season. raspberry ends up sending runners and now it has completely taken over the patch that you see in the first link and is about 5 feet tall. if i take another pic I’ll either post it or mail it to you. googling may provide instant gratification though !
