The measurements of things like fruit in a recipe aren't critical-if they are, they will be listed by weight or volume.

really? in a pickle recipe where it is the main ingredient? go to the stuffed eggplant recipe in dakshin. follow it to the letter. then take a pic and send me the pic. let's see if it looks anything like the pic in the book. mine doesn't.

so have we - the post is 4 years old :-) see updates to the post at the bottom after trying more recipes and also the comment thread.

microwave is just an option for those who want to use it. you'll have no problem if you trust the review as much as you trust cookbooks or vague directions that you find elsewhere.

Hmmm..I've been cooking from 'Dakshin' for years and never had a problem with measurements. You quartered the amounts in the Mango Thokku-well, sometimes spies and flavourings work mysteriously. Halving or quartering an amount sometimes simply doesn't work.
And who ever has heard of anyone having problems with 'one large mango'. I folloow those kinds of vague directions all the time with no trouble whatsoever, and I am a seriously terrible cook unless I have a recipe to go by. The measurements of things like fruit in a recipe aren't critical-if they are, they will be listed by weight or volume.
I'm also not sure how much I can trust a cookbook review from someone who toasts spices in a microwave.
Ditch the microwave, and lighten up!

[...] Jai & Bee of Jugalbandi who have ardently tried many recipes, encouraging us with their compliments such as – “The title description of Cooking at Home with Pedatha is “Vegetarian recipes from a traditional Andhra kitchen”. The book makes no further claims. What you see is what you get. There are just 61 recipes, but no one dish is like the next…” [...]

I had borrowed Dakshin from my local library and was drooling over the pics. I am from Karnataka, familiar with a lot of those dishes but the pics were amazing. So, I bought the book (although I try not to buy too many cookbooks that might collect dust eventually) and tried some recipes. For example, I was dying to try crispy maddur vada type dish, turned out that they were not one bit crispy even though I thoroughly followed the recipe! Quite disappointed, found other ways to make them crispy and now...that book is sittin' there...collecting dust. Sigh.. I presented the book to three of my nieces before I realised the lacunaes.
