We mentioned how we wouldn’t mind having cereal for breakkers, lunch and dinner. We didn’t present the full picture. We wouldn’t mind having cereal for a snack either – you know, those in-between times when you want something crunchy and salty with a cup of masala chai.

On one of our web trawls, we encountered this terrific recipe for ‘cereal chivda’.

Chivda is the Indian equivalent of Chex Mix.

We’ve been making cereal bhel regularly, but cereal chivda is now a staple in our home. Our attempt to make a very low-sodium version has yielded rewarding, and very addictive results. The twist here is the addition of Mrs. Dash Sodium Free Lemon Pepper Seasoning. The lemon zest in it makes it tangy and the pepper and other spices make it flavourful and very salty-tasting without the addition of salt. We love it, especially because it does not leave you feeling dehydrated as other salt-laden snacks do. This is a very versatile recipe.

Basic building blocks:

cereal (preferably not very sweet)
assorted nuts
curry leaves
green chillies
a hint of sugar or dried fruit
spices

CEREAL CHIVDA

Ingredients:
3 cups bran flakes
3 finely minced green chillies (we use thai chillies)
1/4 cup packed curry leaves
1/2 cup roasted peanuts
1/2 cup dalia (pottu kadala)
1/3 cup dried cranberries
1/4 tsp. turmeric powder, 1/2 tsp. each Mrs. Dash salt-free lemon pepper spice blend, cayenne powder, cumin powder and ascorbic acid (vitamin C/citric acid powder)
2 tablespoons oil

Method:
1. Heat the oil in a pan, add the minced chillies and curry leaves, and stir until the curry leaves are almost crisp. Add the peanuts and dalia, toast them a bit, add the spices and stir for 10 seconds.
2. Add the bran flakes and the dried cranberries, toss the whole thing together gently.
3. Cool and store in an airtight jar.
