Cereal for breakfast, lunch and dinner
February 5, 2007 | 4 Comments

That’s what the latest series of restaurant chains have to offer. Pick from a variety of over 50 cereals, make up your own creations, add your toppings and liquid of choice, sit in a Starbucks ambience, and make it a dining experience. With names like Cerealicious, Cereal City and Cereal Bowl, they seem to have the venture funding and enthusiastic public response to make it work.
Well, we think it’s a great idea. We seriously love cereal.
We’ve experimented with a whole gamut of brands, looking for
1. Atleast 6 grams of fibre per 60 gram serving.
2. Wholegrain listed as the first ingredient on the box
3. No more than 8 grams of sugar per 60 gram serving
4. No partially hydrogenated or hydrogenated fats
5. No more than 200 mg of sodium per 60 gram serving
6. No sweeteners like aspartame or high fructose corn syrup
The boxed brands often either didn’t match our criteria, or lacked freshness. Hot oatmeal is great on weekends, but on rushed weekdays, we prefer a no-cook alternative.
An outrageously good cereal creation that involves planning the night before, and therefore is not feasible for disorganised folk like us:
Jamie Oliver’s Pukkolla
We finally settled on our own formula: bran flakes, cranberries, raisins and almonds. Assembling our cereal ensures we have the freshest ingredients, which we get from our local food co-op. We also know exactly what each component contains.
We’ve had this almost daily for four years, and have never considered changing the recipe. With the addition of some chopped fruit, it makes a filling meal any time of the day.

RECIPE:
Kickstart-Your-Day Cereal
(a week’s worth for two people)
Ingredients:
8 cups bran flakes
3/4 cup dried cranberries
3/4 cups raisins
1 cup slivered almonds
Method:
Toast the almonds at 350F for 6 minutes. Cool and mix with the rest of the ingredients.
J likes his with 1% milk, B prefers unsweetened soymilk. Add a tablespoon of ground flax while serving.

We love Fiber One Honey Clusters very much. For 52gm serving it has 13gm of fiber, 6gms of sugar and scant 1.5gm fat. The All Bran in that brand is simply mulch!
